Welcome to Pétanque La Rose

What is pétanque? It's a French throwing game played with steel balls (boules) where the goal is to score points by tossing them as close as possible to a smaller target ball, called the cochonnet.

We welcome players of all levels from beginner to experienced. We are

happy to teach you what you need to know to play and have boules you can use as you learn. Kids are welcome with an adult.

You'll find us on the courts most Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from about 4:00 to 6:30 or so, our current summer hours.

Our courts are located at the Sonoma County YMCA field located near the intersection of Stewart and 13th Streets in Santa Rosa, California.

About Us

Formally established in April 2023, Pétanque La Rose (PLR) had been a dream of Lynn and Richard Bell’s for many years after coming across the game while traveling in France. Upon their return home to Santa Rosa, California they discovered a local pétanque community existed but there was no club in their hometown.

A core group of pétanque enthusiasts networked to spread the word about the game and worked to make Pétanque La Rose Club a reality. After years of playing on school baseball fields and tracks PLR found a temporary home on a field located at our local YMCA. Work continues with the city to build permanent courts in a city park.

A member of the Federation of Petanque USA (FPUSA), the official governing board for pétanque in the United States, Pétanque La Rose is in the Northern California Region.

When and Where
We Play

You will typically find a group of us playing Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday afternoons beginning around 4:00 but PLR members can access the courts anytime the YMCA is open.

Be sure to bring your hat and water bottle.

Updates due to weather, etc., are communicated to PLR members through the Signal app.

Please note: courts are closed on major holidays.

Tournaments

Feeling competitive? There are many opportunities throughout the year to participate in tournaments with our neighboring clubs. We play in Petaluma, Sonoma, San Rafael, San Francisco, Sacramento and Lafayette. There are a variety of formats and all skill levels are welcome. Information about tournaments is shared with PLR members via the Signal app.
